Ever grow up catching horny toads?

Those tiny scaly creatures were a familiar sight running across grasslands of Oklahoma and often a prized target for kids in a nostalgic game of catch and release. Now the population of Texas horned lizards, as they’re actually called, has decreased so much so that anyone is hard pressed to spot one out in the wild. Why? The ongoing loss of their natural habitat and decline of their favorite snack, ants.

Fortunately, the Oklahoma City Zoo is helping to repopulate the species with partners from the University of Oklahoma and Tinker Air Force Base through the Texas Horned Lizard Project. By helping to grow and hatch “headstart” hatchlings in the Zoo’s Lizard Lab, the Zoo’s herpetology team is helping to raise a lounge of lizards that are then reintroduced out in the wild.

Join us in supporting these classic and toad-ally awesome creatures by donating to the Texas Horned Lizard Project today!

To keep the spirit of nostalgia alive, COOP Ale Works has generously offered to donate a percentage of all sales on their classic Horny Toad Ale and limited run Blood Orange Horny Toad Ale to the Texas Horned Lizard Project.

Tracking Packs

These radio transmitters are applied to the lizards with animal safe glue. They enable researchers to track the movements of the animals once they are reintroduced into the wild.
